Recap: Lions ease past Bears to continue hot start to season

Lakeside takes a four-run victory over Blanchet in an inter-division match up.

The Lakeside Lions continued their hot start to the season on Monday with a 5-1 victory over the Bishop Blanchet Bears, making their record 4-1. Last season the Lions were fifth in the Metro League, with an 11-5 record and are looking to move up the rankings in the 2025 season. The Blanchet Bears ended the 2024 season 5-11, finishing tenth in Metro.

To start the game, Lakeside’s starting pitcher and senior captain, Teddy Tokheim, threw the first five innings with an impressive stat line of 1 earned run and 6 strikeouts which, in addition to hitting a double, helped push the Lions towards a big win. Following the dominant starting performance from Tokheim, Sid Suri took the mound and finished off the game with two hitless innings. From the offensive side of the ball, the Lions had multiple stand out performances. Coulter Dearie had 2 hits, David Fey went 2/3 with 2 RBIs, and Henry Dejanikus had a 2 run single to open up the Lions scoring.

Even though the Lions jumped began the game with a hot start, scoring multiple runs in the first few innings, Bear’s reliever Brandon Burgess kept Blanchet in the fight, holding Lakeside scoreless for the rest of the game. Although it was tough game for the Bears, seniors Mikey Rican and Cole Allegro both had 2 hits, doing their best to keep their team together. Rican was credited with Blanchet’s only run on an RBI double.

The Bears headed into this game looking for an upset, but ultimately the Lions pitching staff was to strong for them to overcome in this inter-division matchup. The Lions were the favorite going into this game and performed as expected to get the 5-1 victory over the Bears.
