EC Volleyball Takes Down Skyline in an Intense Non-league Matchup

Crusaders volleyball comes back to beat the 4A Spartans after a tough loss last year.

In this year’s annual non-league matchup between the Crusaders and the Spartans, the Crusaders took the victory in a 3-1 fashion at home gym after being swept by the Spartans last year at Skyline.

Despite losing the first set, the Crusaders offense was led by senior setter Lola Togia who dished out a season high of 38 assists. Benefiting from Togia’s sets was senior attackers Lauren Wiese totaling 12 kills and Avery Merritt who totaled 20 kills.

In addition to Togia’s commanding of the Crusader offense, the backcourt was led by senior libero, Leila Vierra, who had 20 digs this game — keeping the Spartans at bay. Junior Lauren Rettkowski also chipped in with an impressive defensive effort, tallying a season high of 11 digs en route to the EC victory.

Though the result didn’t go Skyline’s way, the Spartans came out hot and never trailed EC in the opening set which they won 25-19. The Spartans were led by junior Auburn commit Emma Gutke. But Gutke couldn’t keep Skyline afloat as the Crusaders battled back to claim the next three sets and seal the result.

Skyline will return to King Co 4A league play on Monday October 21st where they will take on Mount Si. The Crusaders will look to take their 4 game winning streak to 5 against Ballard on Tuesday.
