Girls soccer is at the forefront of the Metro League this week, as multiple top-five opponents battled to move up the ranks.
Lakeside (9-1-2)
Lincoln (9-2-1)
Eastside Catholic (9-4-0)
Seattle Prep (6-2-4)
Holy Names (5-2-5)
All five teams took the field Monday night. Lincoln, who struggled to remain relevant last year in the rankings, took home a win against Garfield with a score of 4-0. Lakeside beat Roosevelt 4-0. Holy Names took on Eastside Catholic in a close fight, theCrusaders ultimately won with a final score of 1-0. To wrap up the night, Seattle Prep and Ballard battled till the end, concluding in a 1-1 tie.
Lakeside continued their winning streak on Wednesday, with a score of 3-1 against Garfield. Energy and effort from Lakeside resulted in goals by senior Lexi Roth and junior Preslie Lampitt. Roth proved the be a very valuable player in assisting Lampitt’s goal as well as scoring two of her own, the senior led her team to victory. While Garfield put up a good fight, with a PK by returning varsity sophomore Isabel Willems, they couldn’t keep up with Lakeside who proved once again, why they are ranked number one in the league.
Rosevelt 1-2 Lincoln
Lincoln and Roosevelt showed off Thursday night for a close game ending the night with a score of Lincoln 2-1 Roosevelt. The Lincoln Lynx worked theirway up the standings this season, dedicating effort and strategy to each game. Last season the Lynx held a streak of four losses to close out their season. This year, they have tallied seven wins in counting. Their comeback is nothing short of outstanding, even playing against strong teams such as Roosevelt, who is ranked No. 9 in the Metro League and a feirce competitor.
West Seattle 1-2 Seattle Prep
Across the city, Seattle Prep faced West Seattle resulting in Prep’s favor with a score of 2:1. West Seattle, coming in as the underdog, played a great game and sneaking in a goal. In response, Prep amped the energy and offense, scoring two goals of their own and allowing them to take the win.
Garfield 1-6 Holy Names
Holy Names proved themselves worthy of their spot in the top five as they beat Garfield 6-1 on Friday. Holy Names has had quite the unpredictable season this fall with a handful of ties, and a just about equal ratio of wins to losses. Having come off a tough loss to Lakeside earlier in the week, Garfield looked to bounce back and move up the Metro League standings. However, Holy Names showed up and showed out on the field to take home a decisive victory.
Closing out the week, the Eastside Catholic Crusaders took the win against the Raiders. With two goals scored, the Crusaders posed a fierce offense. The Crusaders’real strength however, lied in their defense. Eastside Catholic’s defense shut down many attempts to get down the field and goalie Logan Hellyar effortlessly blocked the few shots that nearly made it to the net. Garfield will face Bishop Blanchet this Tuesday in an attempt to get another win under their name before the season comes to a close.
The top five teams for girls’ soccer in the Metro League exhibited excellent athleticism and effort as they fought to maintain their rankings with post season just around the corner. These five powerhouses brought fields to life across the greater Seattle area last week and anyone who watched can attest that their energy, skill, sportsmanship and is both captivating and admirable. One can only hope this week brings equally as entertaining and skillfully executed games.
