Today, a battle between 2 top softball teams will rally in a highly anticipated matchup. The visiting Roosevelt Roughriders will venture to Mill Creek to take on the Jackson Timberwolves. Both teams sit atop their respective leagues, setting the stage for an intense battle on the diamond.
The number one team in 3A Metro League, Roosevelt High School, enters the game with an impressive undefeated record of 7-0 in district play and a solid overall record of 7-2-1. Leading the charge for Roosevelt at the plate is junior Maddie Lee with an outstanding .522 batting average. Senior Janie Goodnow has been effective with 10 RBIs, while senior Claire Schmitt has tallied up 14 hits.
On the opposing side, Jackson High School carries the weight of a strong legacy. Ranked 2nd in the state and an impressive 28th nationally, Jackson holds a 12-1 overall record. Despite a recent tough 1-0 loss to Skyview High School, Jackson remains a force to be reckoned with, having been last year’s defending 4A WIAA Softball State Champions with a remarkable 28-1 record.
Jackson’s roster includes three Division 1 commits who are sure to impact the game. Senior shortstop Rachel Sysum, committed to Fresno State, brings defensive heads up plays in the field and offensive firepower at the plate. Standout pitcher and first baseman Yanina Sherwood, committed to UNLV, has already thrown three impressive no-hitter games this season and struck out 134 batters. Joining them is pitcher and outfielder Allie Thomsen, committed to the University of Washington, leading the 4A division in home runs along with Sherwood with 7 a piece.
With such talent on both sides, Wednesday’s game promises to bring a competitive match-up on the field and at the plate. This game is sure to bring the Roughriders competition unlike the Metro League.
