The Lakeside boys’ soccer team lost to Seattle’s Roosevelt Rough Riders by a score of 1-0 in the final minutes of the match. Roosevelt senior Ayden Rieke-Wey (#26, midfielder) received a long ball from a free kick. Lakeside’s keeper came out but missed the ball. Ayden tapped the ball in and scored the only goal of the post-season match. The Riders find a way to win in the final minutes! Lakeside players and fans objected to the goal, claiming the keeper was fouled while in the air trying to grab the ball. The goal stood, however, and secured Roosevelt’s win. The Roosevelt Rough Riders came through with a tap in goal by Alex Patterson (#6, senior). Patterson headed a ball from the defense, the keeper missed the grab, and Patterson knocked the ball into the net.
Lakeside initially took to the pitch with senior Thiago Ausland (#1) in goal, sophomore Luke Allen (#6) in the midfield, and junior Adam Walker (#12) out front. They had a couple corners, a free-kick outside the box after a foul by Roosevelt and several missed shots in the first half. Lakeside’s Thiago had a save at the beginning of the second half, junior Ozzie Ribas (#7) earned the Lions a corner. The match started to get chippy in the second half with each team received a yellow card. The Roosevelt Rough Riders came through with a tap in goal by Alex Patterson (#6, senior). Patterson headed a ball from the defense, the keeper missed the grab, and Patterson knocked the ball into the net.
Coming into Friday’s match, Lakeside boys were ranked 45th in Washington state and Roosevelt was ranked 121st, according to MaxPreps Sports online. The last time these two teams met, on April 15th, the match ended in a tie. They also played each other April 2nd and Lakeside won 3-2.
Friday’s match at Memorial Stadium was the second post-season match for both teams. Roosevelt advanced in the post-season bracket after beating Eastside Catholic 1-0 on Wednesday, May 1st at Roosevelt High School’s home field in Seattle. Roosevelt moves on to play Ballard High School on Monday at 5:30 at Memorial Stadium. In the normal season, Roosevelt tied Ballard once and lost to Ballard once. The winner of that match is guaranteed a spot in the state tournament.
The future for the Lakeside Lions boy’s soccer team depends on the outcome of a Monday, May 6th game against O’Dea High School. The winner of that game plays the winner of the Bishop Blanchett vs. Garfield High School game, also being held on May 6. If Lakeside wins the loser bracket, they will head to the 3A state tournament. During the regular season, Lakeside lost 2-1 to O’Dea in March and then won against O’Dea in late April. On Friday, May 3rd, O’Dea lost to Ballard High School in a post-season penalty shootout.
