Senior lacrosse captain Cam McColly has big dreams for the upcoming season — specifically, to win state. But with a handful of new faces, is the state’s top prize realistic for a program that’s still trying to build itself up as a fixture in the postseason tournaments? McColly sure thinks so.

“I think we’ll be pretty good. We have a lot of young guys, but everyone so far has been learning very well. We’ve all been working well together, and it’s been a fun season so far.”

Especially with younger players on the roster, McColly wants to set a good example. Being a role model and leader amongst the team, McColly has steadily amped up his training regimen. As a senior now, is his training regimen different from when he was younger?

“A little bit because obviously. l want to be there for everyone else to help them out and then also, lately the past two years I’ve been doing more lifting and strength training outside of school and outside of practice. So I feel like that’s helped with getting me prepared for this season and staying sharp. For the team, I try getting the younger kids in the weight room.”

It’s a young team, and with that, comes the need for leaders to step up and guide them. McColly’s idea of leadership involves getting the younger kids involved in practice. He wants to have practice be fun while still working hard.

“I’d say [being a leader] is more about like bringing people together and making sure everyone feels included and wants to be there at practice. Then also having fun with it, and it doesn’t have to be so serious all the time.”

McColly is not new to the sport either. He has been playing lacrosse for as long as he can remember. The thing that draws him to lacrosse is the ability to compete.

“I’d say I’ve been [playing] since 3rd grade, so I’ve been around it for a while. Also I just like the competitive aspect of it.”

Despite excelling in lacrosse, he has a few other seasonal sports he enjoys in his free time, and not surprisingly, it involves bringing people together to have fun.

“I enjoy golf and I also like skiing in the winter. During summertime, I like hanging out with friends and going out on the lake and stuff similar to that.”

McColly likes to make sure the camaraderie on the team is strong. And that means team dinners and other team activities. The team gets along well with each other by making jokes and having a good time.

“Well we are always making jokes with each other, and in the locker room before and after, it always makes it fun and engaging especially with each other, and also, we have team dinners too.”

Eastside Catholic’s lacrosse team is currently 2-0 and look to continue to be undefeated. They play Peninsula at home at 8pm on March 19th.
