SEATTLE – At Jefferson Park Golf Course the Metro League Golf Championship saw 16 schools enter, but only four move on to Districts. Some of the favorites to move on were the undefeated Roosevelt Rough Riders (11-0), Eastside Catholic Crusaders (6-3-1), Bishop Blanchet Bears (10-2), and the West Seattle Wildcats (7-3).
To start the day, the lowest ranked #5 players for each team went off, then the 4s, then the 3s, and vice versa, until everyone had gone off on their 18-hole journey.
After 9 holes, 6 players out of the 89-player field were at or under par. They were Roosevelt’s Will Sires and Carson Church, West Seattle’s Simon Vance and Miles Chandler, Seattle Prep’s Ayden Stack, and Bishop Blanchet’s Henry Day.
As the final players came in and scores were tallied, one thing was clear: Roosevelt was going to take the top spot. The undefeated Roughriders were immaculate, coming in just 15 strokes over par over their 5 golfers, with a 360, which was good enough for first place. Their top performers were Will Sires with a 68 (-1) and Caelen Wobbrock with a 69 (even).
Second place was also clear. Eastside Catholic, with consistent performances across their lineup, secured second place with a score of 369. Only 6 strokes separated their top player from their worst player. Their top players were August Leinweber with a 71 (+2) and Ian Hufford with a 72 (+3).
Third place was secured by Bishop Blanchet, who were just two strokes behind the Crusaders with a score of 371. Their best were Henry Day with a 67 (-2) and Hutch Stellick with a 71 (+2)
The battle for fourth place was a close race between 3 schools: West Seattle, Seattle Prep, and Ingraham.
All these teams had a few very strong scores, but in the end, West Seattle took the fourth and final spot with a 381, while Prep and Ingraham were stuck with scores of 387 and 388, respectively. West Seattle, much like Eastside, had very consistent scoring. Their best players were Simon Vance with a 70 (+1) and Milo Stover with a 74 (+5).
After this, the only thing left to decide was the individual crown for the best solo score. That title went to Bishop Blanchet’s Henry Day, who shot two under par with the help of 5 birdies. Other notable scores who were not mentioned earlier were Seattle Prep’s Ayden Stack with a 70 (+1), Ingraham’s Brendan Doyle with a 72 (+3), and Lincoln’s Theo Shernoff with a 72 (+3).
Overall, there were some impressive performances across the field, and we will see what Roosevelt, West Seattle, Bishop Blanchet, and Eastside Catholic will be able to do at Districts and beyond.
