Girls State Soccer: Lions, Rough Riders, Lynxes march on

The girls soccer Metro League tournament begins to narrow down on remaining teams as they brush past their opponents to compete for the win.

Lakeside 2-1 Mead

Shoreline, WA — The Lakeside Lions sent MHS’s Panthers back to Mead with a close score of 2-1. Their previous game sent them off strong and confident with an astounding 7-1 win against Oak Harbor. The mighty Lions emerged triumphant once again for the quarterfinals, with a guaranteed spot for the top five places.

As has been the case all season for the Lions, Mia Broom served as the spearhead for the Lions attack, firing the Lions ahead in under five minutes before doubling the advantage later in the game to make it 2-0 to the home team — a scoreline that held true until the final whistle. The goals are Broom’s 9th and 10th of the season. Lakeside’s Kate Yee and Allie Tay tested Mead’s keeper Joey Hornyak, but the Panthers’ goalie held them in check while the visitors probed for a goal of their own.

Mead was able to claw one goal back to make it 2-1, but it wasn’t enough in the end and Lakeside advanced to the next round. Mead High School came into the game having ousted Auburn Riverside in the first round of state competition. Unfortunately the momentum wasn’t enough, and the Panthers go home with the modest achievement at reaching the playoffs.

Now, Lakeside holds an opportunity to take it all at their coming game (November 17th, 5pm @ Sparks Stadium), against the Shorecrest Scots, an unfamiliar foe for the Lakeside Lions.

Roosevelt 6-1 Ferndale

The Roosevelt Rough Riders coasted psat the Ferndale Golden Eagles 6-1, removing them from the competition and marching on to the next round of the tournament.

Roosevelt carried an impressive winning streak into the clash, notching wins over power schools such as Seattle Prep, Holy Names, and Nathan Hale. However, the team has suffered previous losses from both Lincoln and Lakeside, as for Roosevelt’s next game they face off against Lincoln after losing to them previously (October 12th) at a score of 2-1.

Will Roosevelt push through and take a winning spot of either second or even first place in state and take it all? They’ve made it to the semifinals for the second year in a row, blasting through schools with impressive scores. Their face-off with Lincoln on this upcoming Friday will determine everything.

Lincoln 4-1 Mt. Spokane

Lincoln crossed the Wildcats of Mount Spokane off the bracket with a whopping score of 4-1. Lincoln has proved to be a formidable team with an impressive season record of 15-3-2. Nothing seems to be able to stop them or get in their way. The Lynxes cut the Wildcats off as they speed by and earn their rightful spot in the semifinals as the quarterfinals fade behind them.

Lincoln’s upcoming game is against Roosevelt, a team the Lynxes beat 2-1 earlier in the season (October 12th). The next iteration of that matchup will be held on November 17th (5pm @ Sparks Stadium), and the winner will undoubtedly be a big challenge for the remaining teams in the tournament.

The vibrant energy around the state tournament continues this week, as favorites and underdogs look to advance into the next round.
