Golf: Roosevelt, EC prepare for premier clash

It’s a clash of titans in the Metro Golf League as the only two undefeated teams, the Roosevelt Roughriders and Eastside Catholic Crusaders, tee off on October 12, 2023, at Jefferson Park. The anticipation is thrilling. Who will claim the title of having a full undefeated season?

Roosevelt has had an outstanding season, triumphing in all seven of their matches leading up to this pivotal showdown. Their confidence is undoubtedly riding high. Roosevelt has been 7-0 this season. Top player Mia Cluff, Junior, contributed a good amount of points to the team. Roosevelt ended their season finishing 4th at the state tournament. The last season girls were 9-0 and placed third at districts and fourth at state. Roosevelt has had an amazing last and their current season is booming. Roosevelt was ranked first in the 2022 team standings for girls golf. The Roosevelt coach, Christopher Rose, shared “Our season has been going great so far. We have been able to play everyone on the roster in the matches which is great for building experience. Our goal is always to compete for Metro Championships and to qualify for the state tournament. I am excited to play Eastside (and the other private schools) as it’s always a good test to see how we stack up. I know there are great players [The Eastside Catholic] team.

On the other side, the Eastside Catholic Crusaders have been equally impressive, boasting an undefeated streak through eight matches. The standout player, Nicole Koong, who committed to California Polytechnic State, and is also Co-Captain of the team, brings talent and experience to the team. Her contributions have been nothing short of stellar.

Additionally, keep an eye on sophomore sensation Kaitlyn Ojendyck, following in Koong’s footsteps, who’s been making her mark on the course. In the 2022 Metro girls tournament, Koong ranked at the top with a score of 75, and Ojendyck ranked in 5th place scoring an 80. Along with Nicole winning the Metro tournament she was named Player of the Year, and was leading the individual standings in first place, in 2022. With Ojendyck and Koong Eastside Catholic ended up getting third in the metro girls tournament.

Both teams are aiming for the Metro Championships and a spot in the state tournament. The match versus Eastside Catholic and Roosevelt is going to be a head on battle for the undefeated title. Both teams have tremendous respect for each other. This match is going to be memorable!
